A New Cyber-Attack on Adobe Emerges
30th June 2011
It’s official – Adobe has just confirmed that another vulnerability in its ubiquitous reader software has been detected and exploited by thieves who have used it to infect user PCs with data-harvesting malware.
The trojan, known as “Wisp,” uses an unpatched weak spot in Adobe’s Flash Media Player, which is embedded into the company’s “Reader” document viewer, and tricks its way into several operating systems, including Windows, Unix and OS X. After sucking up sensitive data, Wisp installs a backdoor on all the systems it has compromised. Two malware-infested PDF documents are currently circulating the Web, dropping two destructive binaries (nsunday.exe and nsunday.dll) into all Windows devices where the user has opened the document files.
Adobe had planned to fix the vulnerability on Flash during the week of November 9th, but until then users may wish to use an alternative document viewer (such as, for example, Foxit). If there’s no way around using the Reader, Adobe advises turning off the “AuthPlay” function.
Criminals appear to have targeted Adobe in recent years by exploiting critical vulnerabilities. Some researchers are even claiming that Reader is becoming one of the world’s most exploited applications, not far below Oracle’s Java framework. With relentless cyber attacks like this occurring so routinely, protecting your PC with robust computer virus protection products like Norton Antivirus or internet security tools such as Norton Internet Security 2011 can spare you a great deal of inconvenience and distress.
