Download Antivirus Program

The most common way of protecting your computer from viruses and other online threats such as malware and spybots is to purchase protection from retail stores or to download antivirus software.  Yet how do you know which is the best antivirus software for your needs and how much should you pay for it?

What many may not know is that you do not necessarily have to pay for your antivirus software at all.  There are in fact many absolutely first rate antivirus programs which are available free to ordinary computer users – but of these, which is considered to be the best antivirus program?

Two of the most commonly used free antivirus programs are AVG and Avast.

AVG is compatible with the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.  It provides the user with basic anti-spyware and antivirus software free of charge, and as a result is the most commonly downloaded software on CNET’S Download.com internet site.  AVG downloads and installs on your computer in a very speedy manner – around five minutes usually.  Registration is free and the download comes with an AVG toolbar that is non-compulsory.  It also comes with a “smart scanning” feature which, while always operating in the background, does so in a slower fashion when the computer is being used so as to avoid slowing down normal operations, but can also detect when the computer is idle and increases the speed of the virus scan accordingly.  With its latest release in late 2010, AVG Free has also increased the threat detection software to the same level as in its fully paid version, meaning users of the free software are not being compromised in their internet safety.  The new version also includes a feature known as the PC Analyzer, which scans the computer for disk and registry errors.  The full version of this is restricted to paying customers, but the free version does come with a one time only offer to clean all the errors it detects in one scan.

Avast has been described as being the world’s number one most popular free antivirus software, with more than a 130 million registered customers who rely on Avast to keep their computer safe from all manner of internet threats.  It is compatible with the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.  Avast is generally regarded as being one of the most effective antivirus programs on the market, providing the same level of protection as many of the full price models.  It comes with antivirus, anti-spyware and heuristics engines, which provide multiple shields to protect your computer from threats in real time, and is almost certainly the strongest antivirus program that is available to home users completely free of charge.  Recent updates have also made the scanning function forty percent faster than previous versions, which means that it accomplishes its task both considerably faster and takes up less of the computer’s resources while it scans.

At the end of the day, both AVG and Avast are good choices for users who wish to protect their computer without paying excessively to do so.
