Getting Rid of Fake AV with Norton Power Eraser
15th February 2011
Users of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security 2011 may be interested to learn of a new feature included in the 2011 versions of these products: Norton Power Eraser. It gets to grip instantly with newly discovered holes found in programs or operating systems before the developers have come up with a patch – sometimes before they even know that the hole exists.
It’s especially aggressive in taking out a form of malware know as “Fake AV” (phony anti virus software posing as the real McCoy which tries to cajole users into buying useless antivirus products which actually contain more malware). Downloadable from the Symantec website, it uses the corporation’s most advanced engine heuristics and trademark “Reputation” technology to identify risks. Detected files are flagged as either “Bad” (i.e., malicious code has been identified) or “Suspect” (i.e., they’re potentially dangerous). Any files flagged as Bad should be immediately removed. Norton Power Eraser also includes a “Remote Scan” feature, which sends files designated as “Suspect” to the Symantec servers for scanning so that malware signatures can be indentified without compromising your PC.
The Power Eraser is exceptionally thorough when it comes to removal, one reason why it leaves the final decision to the user. If you’ve remote scanned a “Suspect” file and the results show that it contains harmful code, it’ll be transferred to the “Detected” category, whereupon you’ll find a “Fix” checkbox automatically checked. If you happen to remove a file by accident, the Eraser comes with inbuilt safeguards allowing you to review and undo previous actions as well as creating numerous System Restore points.
