Instant Messaging - How to Stay Secure

31th March 2011

Like all fast and convenient internet technologies, Instant Messaging has attracted a large following. But, sadly, it’s also attracted the ever-opportunistic attention of cyber crooks. Keeping secure involves a mixture of sharp awareness, practicing good IM habits and using strong computer virus protection like Norton Antivirus 2011 or internet security tools like Norton Internet Security 2011.

IM allows you to send and receive files with ease, but that means that it can also be used to bring you malware like trojans and worms. The latter can send messages to your friends which appear to be coming from you (or vice versa); these often contain a link to a website, which many proceed to click on precisely because it seems to have been sent from someone they know. Bad mistake – the site just dumps malicious code onto the visiting computer. Cyber villains are also known to create fake IM identities, whereupon they engage in scams to engineer identity theft or even predatory behavior.

It’s good practice to make sure you regularly download legitimate IM security patches and updates. Use strong passwords combining words, special characters and numerals – these are exceptionally difficult for cyber thieves to crack. As with email, if you don’t know who sent you a link in a message, don’t click on it. If it appears to have come from a trusted friend, it’s still good policy to let your cursor hover over it for a moment so that you can check that the URL is “legit” before clicking on it. If a friend starts sending you weird messages, close the IM session and phone him or her: uncharacteristic behaviour often signals that an impostor is at work. Finally, don’t use IM to send files, especially if you have sensitive information in them.
