Window Antivirus

In addition to all the other antivirus software packages out there in the market today, Microsoft has developed its own antivirus software that comes as standard with Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.  It can also be downloaded and installed for use with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as well, though it does not work on Windows 2000.  This software comes under the simple name of Windows Defender. The first version of Windows Defender was released in 2006, following a number of early anti-spyware software packages.

Windows Defender acts as a standard antivirus software package, protecting your computer against not just viruses, but also spyware, as well as pop-ups and general slow performance.  The special function known as Real Time Protection enables the computer to be monitored at all times and can recommend courses of action to take should it detect spywarewhile also keeping interruptions to your work at an absolute minimum.  Real Time Protection features a variety of protection options.‘Auto Start’checks out programs that start automatically the moment you switch on the computer.  ‘System Configuration (Settings)’ checks to ensure that all is well with your Windows related security settings. ‘Internet Explorer Add-ons’ checks all programs that begin automatically as soon as you open your internet browser. ‘Internet Explorer Configurations (Settings)’checks on the security settings of your internet browser.  ‘Internet Explorer Downloads’checks all downloads and files that work with Internet Explorer.‘Services and Drivers’looks over the services and drivers that work with Windows.  ‘Application Execution’checks on programs when they start and whilst they are running on your computer. ‘Application Registration’checks over the files and tools associated with the computer’s operating system, while ‘Windows Add-ons’ looks at add-on programs (also sometimes referred to as software utilities) that are designed for use with Windows.

The software can also be used to remove ActiveX applications that have been installed on your computer.  Windows Defender comes with a function that allows users to choose the time that Defender performs scans and checks on the computer, ensuring that it happens at times when it will not interfere with a vital task that the user is performing on the machine.  Other functions of Windows Defender include ‘Internet Explorer Integration’, which checks to ensure the safety of downloads from the internet to ensure they are not malicious, as well as Windows Vista-specific features which prevent startup items from starting upwithout permission when they would normally require approval from the computer administrator.

Another special function of Windows Defender is known as the ‘SpyNet network’, which allows users to report any spyware they have come across to Microsoft as well as monitoring any applications and driver devices that they have allowed to be installed on their computer.  The SpyNet network helps to keep Windows Defender up to date on the latest spyware threats, enabling it to continue protecting your computer to its optimal capacity while giving you the option to have continual updates on your anti-spyware software.
